MyBittorrent is familiar name to most in the BitTorrent community, so it came as a surprise when the site closed down. After a dispute concerning the site’s future, the two founders agreed to go their separate ways and close the website. One of them has returned with a new torrent search engine. Launched in 2004, myBittorrent grew to be a well-established and prominent torrent site over the next few years.
The site didn’t encounter any troubles and was flying under the radar for a long time, but it did have a dispute with its domain registrar, GoDaddy. After emails back and forth the owners were able to regain control, although the myBittorrent domain was hijacked by GoDaddy after receiving a complaint from Microsoft. In the years that followed the two founders continued business as usual, frequently changing the appearance and design of the site. In actuality, plans changed so often that they never was able to add new features to the website.
“Instead of adding new items we were spending time on fixing attributes that used to work just fine,” Rex, one of the site’s founders told TorrentFreak. MyBittorrent grew out to become one of the torrent sites, serving millions of visitors with torrents every month. This prevalence, with Rex’s spouse, who wanted to scale down, raised doubts together with the increased legal pressure against fellow torrent sites such as The Pirate Bay and Mininova.
Eventually this resulted in a rift between the two owners. His partner opted to shut down the operation permanently, although rex wanted to continue with the website. To resolve the dispute both decided to go their separate ways.
This summer myBittorrent was shut down for good, but not before there was a replacement set up. A new website was launched by Rex under a new name — yourBittorrent to fill the gap left by myBitTorrent. “The biggest difference between the two websites is that yourBittorrent has confirmed and adult torrents,” Rex told TorrentFreak, adding that he intends to include many new features in the not too distant future, including an integrated subtitle search engine.
“YourBittorrent will soon have a few million subtitles and IMDB-links linked to all films and TV-shows. The search will also be extended to permit people to search for subtitles. YourBittorrent is going to be the first site at which you can do this,” Rex said. Another essential feature is that the site will verify torrents to prevent the appearance of spam and bogus files. “YourBittorrent has its own verification system with 60,000 verified torrents, and unlike any other torrent websites, we do take steps against fake files,” Rex told TorrentFreak. Thus far 2009 hasn’t been the best year for BitTorrent. Many sites have gone down or obtained negative verdicts in court, so it’s good to see where myBittorrent left, that yourBittorrent continues.
YourBittorrent is a file sharing site founded as myBittorrent in 2003, the site yourBittorrent that is brand new is caused by a split in possession in 2009. The site is a torrent tracking website for the P2P BitTorrent network. As such it will not host files, but hosts information about the location of these files in an torrent file that is indexed. A client located on the computer of an individual reads all these torrent files.
YourBittorrent does not manage what is indexed in its database and uses automated software to search for host file data in the Internet. With a lack of oversight, the site hosts some torrents which allow users to access software, movies, music and other things under which are under copyright and thus illegal to distribute though the files themselves remain on other servers. The site when a request is made by a party removes illegal trackers.
MyBittorrent (Currently called YourBittorrent) was the first BitTorrent website that has ever been “kidnapped” by its registrar. The website went down on 10 January 2006 for violation of the registrar’s abuse policy. MyBittorrent was given two choices in an email sent. The myBittorrent administration sent but GoDaddy refused to react until the myBittorrent administration told GoDaddy they were planning to take legal steps.
Not long after that email was sent, the account that was suspended was fully restored by GoDaddy. In 2006, Microsoft sent a takedown notice to site, complaining about multiple documents, such as a “Windows-to-Linux-Migration” video, a Xandros Linux torrent, and a NeoOffice 1.2 distribution (an OpenOffice.org fork for Mac OS X). On 22 March 2009, myBittorrent’s owners had a disagreement over the website’s future.
Over time and the continuing juridical procedures contrary to other torrent sites, like The Pirate Bay made among the owners wish to downsize the website cease running it. On the other side, another co-owner needed it to become bigger and potentially merge with other torrent sites. They decided that they would each go their own way. 1 owner would maintain myBittorrent.com and following a transition period shut it down, while another owner would move all the torrents to yourBittorrent.com.
Between July 2009 and March 2009 a transition period was held by myBittorrent’s proprietors. On 9 July 2009, the domain myBittorrent.com was closed down after most of the visitors had moved onto yourBittorrent.com already.
