What’s a bulletin board?

A bulletin board is an online discussion website. It’s sometimes also known as a ‘board’ or ‘forums’. It can include several categories, consisting of threads, forums and individual posts.

How is all this structured?

The bulletin board as a whole comprises various categories (broad subject areas), which themselves comprise forums (more specific subject areas) that contain threads (discussions on a subject) that are composed of individual articles (in which a user writes something).

The board home page includes a list of forums and categories, with basic statistics for each – including the amount of posts and threads, and which member submitted the latest message.

When you click on a forum’s title, you’re taken to the list of threads that it contains. A thread is a conversation between guests or members. Each thread starts out as one post and develops as more individual articles are added by different users. Threads could be rated (?) To demonstrate how popular or useful they are and may comprise polls (?) .

To begin a new thread simply click on the + Post New Thread button (you will need the correct permissions to do this).

Threads can be arranged in several distinct ways. The default is to have the thread with the latest activity on top. You may also reverse the sorting order by clicking on the arrow beside the title of the active choice. (Notice that ‘sticky’ threads will always be in the top no matter how you change the viewing choices).

Whenever there are more threads to show than will fit on one page, you might see the ‘Page’ box, that comprises page numbers. This indicates that the list of threads has been divided over a couple of pages.

This process of dividing lists of things over many pages is used throughout the board.

‘Sticky’ threads are made by moderators or administrators (?) , and remain ‘stuck’ to the peak of the list, even if they have not had any articles recently.

How can I read a thread?

Each post in a thread is made by a member or a guest. You will see some brief details about the member who made the thread over the primary post message. Sometimes it’ll be on the side of this post.

If this button doesn’t appear, it might mean that you’re not logged in as a member, or that you don’t have permission to answer, or that the thread has been closed to new replies.

If enabled, there’ll also be a ‘Quick Reply’ box where you can quickly enter a response without needing to go into the ‘Post Reply’ page. You might want to click the quick reply button Response in a post to trigger the fast reply box before you can enter it.

On long threads you might want to change how the posts are arranged. For more on different ways to see and browse threads, click (?) .

Is there a quicker way to get to forums?

If you know which forum that you need to visit, you can use the ‘Quick Navigation’ controller, which appears in the bottom of several pages inside the board.

How do I find more information about members?

To view details about a particular member, click on the user name. .

What’s the Navigation Bar?

The navigation bar on top of each page has links that will assist you move around. A ‘breadcrumb’ area in the top left shows where you are now. To other helpful features.

What’s the ‘What’s Happening?’ Box on the plank home page?

On the board home page you will see a section at the bottom that tells you what is happening at the present time. It tells you things like the amount of registered users online, the amount of guests, as well as things like birthdays, and forthcoming events.

Can I change how the board looks?

You might have the ability to change the styling of this board by using the style changer at the bottom left of the page. This lets you choose various skins which alter the color scheme and look of the board. If this option doesn’t appear, the board can’t be restyled.

The administrator will most likely require you to register so as to use all the features of this forum. Being enrolled gives you an identity on the board, a fixed username on all messages that you post and an online public profile. How do I enroll? You’ll be asked to select a user name, password and then input a valid email address. Moreover there’ll be some other areas to which you’ll be encouraged to respond. Some will be compulsory while others are optional. Once this is complete you’ll either be fully enrolled, or sometimes you might need to click on a link in an ‘activation email’ delivered to your email address. After you have done this you’ll be registered. Note that entering your email address won’t leave you open to ‘spam’, as you can opt to hide it from other board users. You’ll probably have the ability to enable other registered users to contact you through email, but the system won’t display your email address to them unless you give consent. More information regarding this is available during the registration procedure.

Then, type in the keyword or phrase you would like to look for, and choose either ‘Show Threads’ or ‘Show Posts’ to see the results. By selecting posts, you’ll be shown only the real post where the search word appears.

For more control over the search, choose ‘Advanced Search’ in the drop-down box. The advanced search page lets you limit your search to individual forums, find threads or posts by user, or return results based on tags (?) . Additionally, there are options to find articles from a specific date, or ribbons with a particular number of replies.

How do I look for a particular forum or thread?

If you’re browsing a forum, you can quickly look for a thread or article inside it by clicking on the ‘Search this forum’ link near the top of the page (it is above the list of threads). You may also search for individual articles within a thread by clicking on the ‘Search this Thread’ link near the top of any thread view page.

How do I see the most recent posts?

There are two methods to quickly see recently created or updated threads.

If you’re not logged in, the ‘today’s articles’ link will reveal a list of all threads which were updated or created in the past 24 hours.

If you’re logged in, the ‘Today’s Posts’ link will change to ‘New Posts’, which gives you a list of all threads which were created or updated since your last visit.

The administrator can also set the forums up so that every thread you read is indicated in the database. If this option is set, then new threads (or threads with new articles) won’t be marked as read till you’ve actually read them.

There’s an integrated time limit to this, but that will automatically mark all threads as ‘read’ after a fixed number of day, whether you truly have read them or not. The default setting is 10 days, but the secretary could make this lower or higher.

Tags are a helpful way to look for threads with similar subject matter and content. This complements the standard search system, which searches only for specific words or phrases or articles by specific users.

As an example, if the subject matter is ‘photography’ then you may add the label ‘photography’ to the tag list. However, you might also add tags such as ‘digital image’, and ‘camera’ (based, obviously, on the nature of the ribbon).

This may categorize this thread with the other threads which have matching tags, whether or not they have the word ‘photography’ in them.

Tags are originally added to ribbons from the user who started the thread. Other users may also have the ability to add and remove tags.

Clicking on a label will permit you to view different threads which have the identical tag – and which could be related. Clicking on the term ‘Tags’ at the surface of the box will take you to a review page with a ‘tag cloud.’

This cloud permits you to see which tags are the most popular – the bigger the word, the more times it’s been used on threads inside the board. There’s also an additional tag cloud on the advanced search page which shows you the tags which were searched for (or clicked on) the most.

Yes. To send an email to another member, you can either see them on the member listing, or pick the Send Mail alternative from the username menu at any place they’ve written.

This will usually open a page which has a form where you can enter your message. When you have finished typing your message, then press the ‘send email’ button and your message will be sent immediately.

For privacy reasons, the receiver’s email address isn’t revealed to you through this procedure.

Why can not I send an email to somebody?

If you can’t find an email button or link for a member, it means either that the administrator has disabled email functions for this forum, or that the member has stated that they don’t want to get email from other members.

Whenever you view a thread, you’ll find a link somewhere on the page that will let you send a brief message to anyone you prefer.

What’s private messaging?

Registered members may also have the ability to send messages to other members of the forum using the personal messaging system.

Which are visitor messages?

Registered members may leave messages to other members in their profile page. These messages can typically be seen by all visitors, including guests, members and search engine spiders.

Can I block articles, messages and emails from specific users?

If there are specific members that bother you and you don’t wish to see their articles or get Private Messages and Emails from them, then it’s possible to add these members to your ‘Ignore List’.

What if I find something offensive?

You may find ‘Report’ links in several areas throughout the board. These links let you alert the board staff to anything that you find to be offensive, objectionable or illegal.
