About website

Extratorrent.cc shows a farewell message: ExtraTorrent has closed ExtraTorrent with all mirrors goes offline.

We erase all data. Steer clear of fake ExtraTorrent websites and clones. Thx to torrent community and all fans. ET was a place to be…. With the passing of ExtraTorrent the torrent community has lost another prominent torrent site. Following the shut down of KickassTorrents and Torrentz.eu in the past months, ExtraTorrent is the 3rd mayor torrent site that stopped operations. ExtraTorrent ‘replacements’ that claim to be a reincarnation of the original website or another extratorrent.cc mirror are fake websites.

ExtraTorrent replacement A brand new site seemed that looks like a clone of the popular ExtraTorrent.cc. The group behind Extratorrent.cd claims to have the new website been restored from ExtraTorrent.cc with all information intact. An email send to several news outfits that they claim: We are a group of admins and uploaders from ExtraTorrent. As you know, the plug was pulled by SAM from ExtraTorrent yesterday and took all data offline from authorities under pressure. We have been working hard to get it back online with all data and were in shock.

We’ve successfully resurrected it back to its glory at extratorrent.cd with all available data. It’s live and fresh data is being updated. Some tiny features aren’t yet working and we are getting it fixed as we speak. Our team had previously resurrected The Pirate Bay and KickAss Torrents (as kickass.cd) if these went offline. These websites are our home and we won’t let anyone ruin them. The team behind the new Extratorrent.cd state that users are now able to register and login, while existing users can continue using their original account to browse and download torrent files.

One is forwarded to the homepage, when assessing the user upload and login pages. Actually a TV shows and film torrents of ExtraTorrents release group ETTV and ETRG can be seen on Extratorrent.cd. Primary release group of ExtraTorrent aka ETRG stopped operating when ExtraTorrent.cc shut down and warned users to stay from clones or Extratorrent replacements. Some people associated with ExtraTorrent now claim to have successfully the torrent site.

Torrents from categories appear to be mirrored from The Pirate Bay. Extratorrent.ag is another copycat that is linked to same group that hijacked EZTV (domain name and manufacturer) and YTS/YIFY. Torrents linked on Extratorrent.ag can be found on the other clones YTS.ag and EZTV.ag. Uploading torrents, commenting and other community features known from the original ExtraTorrent’s aren’t available with this clone.

Extratorrents.cx is just another clone that let people register for an account but don’t supply any tools (no upload, no comments, no configurations).

The sudden decision was announced a few minutes ago in a message posted on the website’s homepage. This means that after the passing of KickassTorrents and Torrentz.eu, the torrent community has to say farewell to another significant player. ExtratorrentIn a surprise move, ExtraTorrent decided to shut down for good. Users who access the site’s homepage are welcomed by a short but very clear message, suggesting that the popular torrent indicator will not return (the message appears intermittently).

ExtraTorrent has closed down permanently.” “ExtraTorrent with all mirrors goes offline. We permanently erase all data. Steer clear of clones and fake ExtraTorrent sites. Thx to all ET fans and torrent community. ET was a place to be….” TorrentFreak achieved to ExtraTorrent operator SaM who confirmed that this is indeed the end of the road for the website. “It is time we say goodbye,” he said, without providing more details.

With ExtraTorrent’s passing the BitTorrent community has lost yet another player that was prominent. Whether this means the end of release groups that are related, such as ettv and EtHD, remains to be seen. ExtraTorrent was founded in November 2006, in a time when sites like TorrentSpy and Mininova were dominating the landscape. Nonetheless, ExtraTorrent was decided to create an audience of its own. The website with millions of daily visitors ended up as the second biggest torrent website, trailing behind The Pirate Bay and went on to outgrow many of its predecessors.

The popularity of the site placed it in the crosshairs of various entertainment industry groups. These outfits pressured hosting domain name services and companies to do it. It is unclear whether pressure had anything to do with the decision to shut down, but that wouldn’t come as a surprise.

ExtraTorrent is the newest in a series of BitTorrent giants to fall lately. Previously, websites including KickassTorrents, Torrentz.eu, TorrentHound and What.cd went offline.

ExtraTorrent creator SaM had earned countless distributing links before shutting down.

Prior to the permanent closure of ExtraTorrent, the site had gone down for two days due to emergency maintenance. Some theorized that the world’s second site would go down. Without specifying why, site owner SaM posted a goodbye to the fans of the site days later. A new report indicates that millions were, along with other top torrent indexing website, made by ExtraTorrent. Digital Citizens Alliance published a report tallying popular pirating sites actually generate.

The report, titled Great Money Gone Bad: Digital Thieves and the Online Ad Business’ Hijacking, claims to show the money. How do content supply sites manage to stay online and earn tons of cash? The response: advertising.

The report states, “The 30 largest sites studied that are supported only by ads average $4.4 million annually, with the largest BitTorrent portal sites topping $6 million” Minor sites, which don’t offer plenty of content, earn a lot of money. The Digital Citizens Alliance states that they make more than $100,00 a year.

To determine the numbers, company MediaLink LLC was commissioned by Digital Citizens Alliance. The company undertook a research project focused on the revenues and profitability of the pirating ecosystem. Focusing only on data from 2013, Digital Citizens Alliance focused in four categories: BitTorrent and P2P Portals Linking Sites Video Streaming Host Sites Direct Download (DDL) Sites Websites like others, The Pirate Bay, KickAssTorrents, and ExtraTorrent gained over $23,181,252 in 2013 in ad revenue alone. Classifying ExtraTorrent as a “large” site, it had an aggregate 94.1% margin. It had an aggregate cost of $1,375,864. Digital Citizens Alliance explained why the margins came out so significant. “With cloud-based hosting becoming a commodity, infrastructure costs are low for all but the DDL segment of the ecosystem, which requires more storage and processing capacity than other segments.”

Sites like ExtraTorrent, along with other sites, drove the most ad revenue for 2013. Both linking and torrent sites accounted for 80% of aggregate ad revenue. Sites generated more than half of the total. Yet, they simply made up less than a quarter of those 596 sample websites. Digital Citizens Alliance gave their summary. “Content theft sites are making millions in earnings, at large margins, from advertising. Developing a content theft site is inexpensive and requires little technological expertise, making ad-supported content thieving ‘easy money’ for bad actors.”

They explained taking down sites like ExtraTorrent won’t function. “Exacerbating the issue for rights-protected content owners and many unwitting premium and secondary brand advertisers would be the concurrent trends of a dramatically growing online worldwide universe hungry for cheap, new content, and the explosion of programmatic buying and selling of advertising.”

Furthermore, efforts to “degrade the viability of ad-supported theft [websites]” have only had margin success. These sites evade detection “with considerable ease.” What can the music industry, in addition to the entertainment industries, do to take down these sites? Citizens Digital Alliance urge a coordinated effort. “A coordinated effort by all stakeholders in the online advertising ecosystem is urgently required to keep the value of electronic media and help make the Internet a safer market for legitimate trade.” Cloned sites fill the void left by sites, such as KickAssTorrents and ExtraTorrent. Explained Citizens Digital Alliance, without a coordinated effort, pirating sites will continue draining millions.

After ExtraTorrent’s takedown, “lovers” and former “admins” quickly resurrected a clone website. But while millions have browsed to the website, they have complained of malicious software and viruses.
