Despite the fact that BitTorrent has been around for a good 6 years now, the lightning fast file sharing protocol has not completely taken off in the mainstream. We figured it was time we set out a beginner’s guide to BitTorrent, since we post a good amount about BitTorrent around here. This is the guide you’ll be able to send next time he gets that glassy look in his eyes when you mention BitTorrent it makes downloading albums educational, public domain videos and files.

Without going into too much detail, here’s a crash course in the file sharing protocol that is BitTorrent (feel free to jump to the best way to find and download a file with BitTorrent section if you are not really that interested in the details. What is it BitTorrent is not a program. [1] It’s a method of downloading files with a distributed file sharing system.

The applications that you use to download files via the BitTorrent protocol are known as BitTorrent clients. BitTorrent is not like Limewire/Kazaa/Napster. This is often the source of confusion for people new to BitTorrent. It’s not difficult to use, it is just different. As soon as you forget about your old file-sharing program (and you will once you begin using BT), the easier it’ll be to begin using BitTorrent.

How does it work

What makes the BitTorrent protocol unique is that it are in the process of downloading a file or spreads. Because BitTorrent distributes documents in countless small chunks and breaks up, before you start sharing, you do not even need to have downloaded the file. As soon as you have a bit of the file, you can start sharing this piece. That is what makes BitTorrent so fast; your BitTorrent client begins sharing when it downloads one chunk of the document (rather than waiting until the whole download has been completed).

To be able to download a file like the educational public domain video we mentioned previously, you must find and download a torrent file (which uses the . torrent file extension) and then open it with your BitTorrent client. The torrent file does not contain your files. It contains information that informs your BitTorrent client where it can find peers who are also currently sharing and downloading the file. How to find and download a file Now that you’ve got a much better idea of the language and process behind BitTorrent, let’s jump right into using BitTorrent.

First you need to download a BitTorrent client (the program that manages your BitTorrent downloads). I’d recommend: uTorrent for Windows/Mac Transmission for Mac Vuze or KTorrent for Linux (Actually, Vuze is cross platform, meaning it is going to work on Windows and Mac, but on these platforms we still prefer the alternatives listed above.) Search for a fantastic torrent. There are a handful of really good web sites for downloading torrents (that’s right, you search for torrents online). The websites I’d recommend (in no particular order) are: Mininova The Pirate Bay isoHunt TorrentSpy btjunkie Demonoid (Demonoid is sort of a members only website, but if you can get a membership, it is one of my favorites [and also a great place to find more esoteric downloads].) Try out whatever one you like.

One might fit your tastes better but I have had good experiences. From this stage, search the site using their search box like you’re using Googletype in the name of what you’re looking for. You will likely get several results, but you need to choose the torrent with the maximum number of seeders (indicated in most BitTorrent search results under a field labeled ‘S’). Seeders are people who are sharing the file and have already downloaded. The seeders, the faster your download will be. Some sites also give you a health meter, which is usually a measure of seeders vs. active downloaders. Download the torrent. Once you’ve found a wholesome and nice torrent, find the download link and download the torrent.

Your browser will ask you what you would like to do with the document, so be sure to tell the torrent in the BitTorrent client to start you downloaded above. Your BitTorrent client will open and (maybe) ask you in which you wish to save the file(s). Select on your location, hit OK, and that is it; your file will start downloading. If you’re not impressed with the speed at first, be patient. It can sometimes have a moment or two before the download ramps up to full speed. Try looking for another torrent with seeders, if you are still not happy. That’s it? Yep, that’s it. That, in brief, is the way to download files using BitTorrent. There may be more to it if you want to dive.

For instance, you can run via the Speed Guide from uTorrent to improve your download speeds (the manual is fairly self explanatory–just go to Options -> Speed Guide to begin), download select files from the torrent as opposed to each file, throttle your bandwidth, and so forth, but this simple guide should get you started. Also, to make sure you keep in good position in the BitTorrent community (and are not labeled a leecher), you must always try to upload as much as you download.

Most BitTorrent clients keep track of your upload/download ratio, and you should generally continue sharing a file until your ratio reaches 1, and you can feel free to remove it from your client (the file will remain on your computer–you simply stop sharing it). If you’re ready to move on to even more advanced BitTorrent business, head on over to our guide to BitTorrent.
